The Codependent Perfectionist’s Guide to Parenting
Alana Carvalho
What if the quest to be a perfect loving parent was the very thing that kept us from giving kids what they really need?
Do you ever feel that despite your best efforts you’re still not the kind of parent you want to be? For parents who struggle with perfectionism or codependency—sometimes without even being aware of it—the pressure to raise good kids can feel impossible. Raising Empowered Children is about becoming aware of the ways that we sabotage ourselves so we can find a more satisfying and loving approach to parenting.
As a trained therapist and recovering codependent perfectionist herself, Carvalho guides us through the major parenting stages, tackling topics like helicopter parenting, natural consequences, boundary setting, role modeling, and positive reinforcement. Through case studies, personal anecdotes, and actionable insights, Carvalho provides practical steps to help us learn how to love our children—and ourselves—for who they are rather than who we think they should be.

Reviews
“I read this book through the lens of an exhilarating and challenging ride of raising three wonderful sons who are now in their thirties. I now have four grandsons under four and fear that this fast-paced, hard driving society may steal their individuality. Raising Empowered Children is a must-read book for parents but also for all those who have a child in their life no matter what the age. This book clearly defines codependency and perfectionism. It provides suggestions that are instrumental on how to support and intervene appropriately so not to hinder the creativity, persona, style and personality of a child. I hope that I can become an empowered grandmother so that my grandchildren define my legacy as inspiring them to live their dreams.” —L. Z., Amazon review
“This book is so powerful. I bought it for a friend who had just had her first child. She thanked me profusely after finishing it and was sure she would be referring back to it as her child grew. I was intrigued to see what it was all about. Having already raised children I didn’t think it would apply. I couldn’t have been more wrong. It helped me to look at myself in a deeper sense and understand my mothering motivations. I only wish I had been able to read it years ago not only for my children’s sake but for my own too.” —Christy, Amazon review
“This book is amazing. It helps change your perception of your child’s behavior, emotions, and experience. It has helped me relate to my children in a different way and has allowed me to enjoy motherhood more. It helps guide you in your own judgements and perfectionistic parenting. Definitely recommend!!” —Amazon review
