Leah Tracosas Jenness

Girl Friday manages an ever-growing pool of talented resource partners, from copyeditors to proofers to indexers to designers, or should we say Leah manages them. Our indispensable managing editor is a masterful juggler of plates and standard bearer of the Girl Friday post-dev editorial process. She’s the consummate problem-solver, an insightful matchmaker of projects to professionals, and a repository of knowledge on everything from manuscript coding to section 7.85 of the Chicago Manual of Style. She’s also an original: While the rest of us have gone gaga over sloths, for Leah it’s all about sharks. As a seven-year-old, this former journalism major at Boston University used to make her mom check out dozens of books on the creatures. She’d then peck out reports on different types of sharks on her own little typewriter.

There’s so much out there to read I feel like I have a hard time going back to a book.

Shark, any shark.

Having my child, quitting smoking, and reading (all of) Infinite Jest including the footnotes.

FAVORITE TYPE OF BOOKS TO WORK ON:

I’m truly agnostic to genre—it’s not a cop out. I learn something from every book, whether it’s how-to or romance.

Leah started her career as a copyeditor/proofreader at a healthcare publisher in Massachusetts that did mostly governance (if you need info on HIPPA, she’s your Girl). She then moved to the Big Apple where she worked at Barnes and Noble Publishing (Spark Notes), marking the first wave of her working for people who started companies in their garages. As a production editor at Hachette she worked on everything from cookbooks to political nonfiction to novels. After working a stint in managing editorial at a packager, Leah discovered nirvana at GFP.
