Karen McNally Upson

It came as no surprise to us that Karen can both pirouette and once milled windfall using a chainsaw because that encapsulates her style: graceful and get ’er done. A phenomenal production editor who keeps us all on task, Karen accompanies her dogged commitment to the schedule with a ready smile and excellent humor. Trust us that production editing is an art and a science as well as hard work, and Kentucky native Karen says she uses her degree in exercise science every day—for real.

Karen has spent more than a decade managing the production of content. She got her start working with digital stock photography. She then had a brief stint in audio encoding before it went the way of the dinosaur. Karen spent years at Amazon, where she became wise to the ways of program management. It was also when she realized there was a way to turn her passion for books into a job. She went to work for Amazon’s publishing arm, which is where she first met the Girls Friday. The rest is history.
