Cartopia: Portland’s Food Cart Revolution by Kelly Rodgers and Kelley Roy

Kelly and Kelley were working with several Portland writers to publish a book about Portland’s food cart phenomenon. They hired Girl Friday to help them work out a logical framework for the book, which combines history, a cart guide, and city planning information, and then to line edit the various writers’ contributions to make the text more cohesive.

I Survived the Killing Fields by Seng Ung

Girl Friday did a comprehensive developmental edit, followed by a detailed line edit of Seng Ung’s self-published memoir covering his life under the Khmer Rouge and his move to Seattle, where he started a family and opened his own successful restaurant. Since English is not Seng’s native language, Girl Friday worked closely with Seng to hone and polish his story for an American audience.

Tapped by Ten Speed Press for holistic work on a manuscript due to production, Girl Friday worked with author Mary Karlin and inhouse staff to edit this contemporary guide to making 100 artisan cheeses at home. Tasked with reducing the manuscript by about one-third, and working with a variety of text styles, from scientific formulas to recipes to tips, Girl Friday worked under an extremely tight deadline to deliver a tight, cohesive book that retained its wonderful comprehensive nature.

We made sure that the authors’ voices blended well together, and that the content remained accessible to a lay-reader, while still offering new challenges to an experienced business leader.

We came up with the fifty walks; plotted each route; chose the shops, restaurants, and sites highlighted on each card; and then provided the series editor with complete guided walks and maps for each, all on a tight four-month turnaround.

Annual Gala Auction Catalog for The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (2006 – present)

Girl Friday pens descriptive marketing copy for the hundreds of items donated each year to the annual gala auction, performing research as necessary for items from elegant African safaris to world-class Cabernets. GFP has consistently met deadlines while working with the coordinator using Auction Tracker specialty software. A “hot sheet” pitches the most valuable items for the gala.

Goose Networks asked Girl Friday to interview key Seattle Children’s employees and write a case study for Goose to use on their website. We researched the various ways in which the software tool Goose designed for the hospital had increased parking revenue and encouraged sustainable behavior, then wrote a compelling case study demonstrating the results.

Shea hired Girl Friday to develop a book proposal featuring Trophy Cupcake’s successful cupcakes and party ideas. We worked with Shea to create an outline, sample chapter, and photo samples, all to make a solid package to send to publisher.

Initially in the market for a book proposal edit, Irvine liked the initial work so much that she asked Girl Friday to collaborate on the proposal more extensively. We then helped the author find a publisher and negotiated the three-book contract. Girl Friday was also hired by Bright Sky to continue working with the author, performing development edits and proofreads on two of the resulting books.

We helped her shape the concept behind the book and some of the themes she would explore, then helped her polish her proposal. After suggesting appropriate editors to submit it to, the project was snapped up by Mountaineers Books and published in late 2009.

We not only helped her craft the proposal and edit the sample materials, but worked closely with Spiegelman in developing a structure for the book. Following the extraordinary success of Dan Savage and Terry Miller’s It Gets Better Youtube project, Penguin wanted to rush a book version to press. Girl Friday worked closely with Savage and Miller to cull the strongest and most varied clips, convert them to prose, edit them, and make sure all permissions issues were in order. It Gets Better became a New York Times bestseller the week of its release.

Girl Friday attended weekly meetings with Nordstrom and reported back to the Chronicle team, kept track of the production schedule, and stayed in close contact with the writer to ensure timely delivery of a clean manuscript. We then edited the content in both manuscript and layout forms, helping to ensure the images matched the content and that the prose was clear and true.

Seattle Climate Action Highlights 2009 and 2010

The City of Seattle hired Girl Friday to write, edit, and perform project management for a report on the City’s climate protection progress for 2009 and 2010. Working from existing press releases and content gleaned through new interviews, Girl Friday wrote original content for an outline set by the Office of Sustainability and Environment. We also mapped out the layout for the booklet, suggested images and visuals, and assisted with selecting and overseeing the project’s designer and proofreader.
